Having a good volume of quality inbound links to your site is one of the most important aspects in order to ranks well in today's search engines, especially in Google. One way links are rated higher than straight reciprocal link exchange. The theme of the linking site, the location of the link and the link text is what determines the quality of the link. It's therefore very important to find sites of similar theme to yours which are willing to link to yours.

Make sure that link text (anchor text) contains the keyword(s) you wish to rank for. The search engines will read the text of the link pointing to the site and rank it against that phrase. Also, it's important to mix the link text and not use the same keywords for every link as this will look like link spamming to the search engines. Finally, remember that links are great way of improving your search engine rankings, but can also produce good traffic from the linking sites.
