Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) has always been around in some from since the first search engine was launched in the early nineties. But it wasn't until the mid nineties with the "dot com boom" that people started to recognise this as a form of marketing and obviously something you could make money off.

SEO today is nothing it used to be 15 years ago were submissions to the search engines and simple changes to your Meta Keyword tag could get you to the top of the rankings. Soon automated submission tools became popular with webmasters who started to over submit their websites to the search engines. This was the first type of search engine spamming.

This lead to a cat-and-mouse game between the spammers and search engines were the spammers (or webmasters) tried to trick the search engines to get their websites to the top in an unethical way. The search engines would soon identify these strategies and quickly change their algorithms in order to push down- or remove these sites from the listings. Today most search engines have got written guidelines in order to assist the webmasters of how to optimise their websites in an ethical manner.

SEO has changed dramatically over the past years especially with Google's "Florida Update" November 2003. This was the first update were links became the most valuable asset in order to rank in the top of Google’s listings.

The future of SEO is unknown but there is speculation around areas that might influence the rankings. Many Search Engine Optimisers are speculation in areas such as Click Through Rates (CTR), Traffic, the length of the domain registration and much more. Only time will tell...
